OUR MISSION

'Rescuing abandoned, abused and neglected llamas and alpacas'

We are located in Corvallis, Montana, in the heart of the beautiful Bitter Root Valley. Charlene Hakes began rescuing abandoned, neglected and abused llamas and alpacas in the mid 1990′s. However, she did not formalize her efforts until April 2005 with the incorporation of Safe Haven Llama & Alpaca Sanctuary as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

As a sanctuary for posterity, it is our purpose to see that these animals are no longer discarded because of people’s unwillingness to be educated, because of falling out of fashion, or because of over-breeding. We are here to be fine shepherds to these beautiful, intelligent creatures and we will keep only their best interests in our minds and hearts.

Many are entrusted to us and we honor that trust. Safe Haven is totally volunteer and donation dependent organization. Although in the past year we have rescued few llamas, our current heard of rescued llamas numbers in the mid-30's.  Few will be adopted and go to caring homes, but others - due to advanced age or health issues - will live out their lives with us.

We constantly seek and welcome qualified partners, plus monetary donations and contributions of essential resources. We are always open to new ideas, partnerships and educational opportunities, so please contact us if you have an idea or project that we could explore and make happen together!
